John Carroll Baseball Bursts Back Into Postseason With Sweep Of Polar Bears

Mike Carbo reached base safely four times and drove in five runs as JCU swept Ohio Northern
On a day when the six-member senior class for John Carroll was honored as the most successful one in baseball program history, they added to their own legend.

Two come from behind wins over Ohio Northern Saturday at a cold and wet Schweickert Field not only gave the seniors their 90th and 91st wins (most for a four-year stretch), but also put the Blue Streaks back into postseason play for the second consecutive year.

Box Scores:  Game One  /  Game Two

The seniors figured prominently in the results as action unfolded in a doubleheader that was delayed an hour due to rain. Mike Carbo (2-4, 3 RBI) and Bryan Robinett (2-4, 2 RBI) led an offensive onsluaght that produced 17 runs in a 17-9 win. JCU erased an early 2-0 deficit with four runs in the second inning, two in the third, five in the fourth and sixth in the fifth.

Junior Tony Evanko was the beneficiary of the offense, improving to 3-3 on the year.

Game two featured violent momentum shifts. John Carroll would take a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to RBI hits from sophomore Tom Hickey and seniors Carbo and John Skomra. But in the top of the sixth, the Polar Bears responded with seven runs of their own to take an 8-6 advantage.

As they have done many times this year, the Streaks found a way to rally late. In the bottom of the eighth, JCU came up with another five-run explosion, this one fueled by a three-run home run by Robinett.

Senior Adam Jenkins picked up the win in relief whle junior Michael Eden earned the save.

John Carroll is now 24-13 on the season and 10-6 (3rd) in the OAC. The Blue Streaks, who conclude their conference schedule Sunday at Wilmington, are bound for their eighth OAC Tournament. JCU also qualified for the postseason in 1992, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004, and 2009.

Ohio Northern slips to 26-12 overall and 10-8 in league play, and would need help to return to the OAC Tournament for the first time since 2000.
