John Carroll Road Blocks Unable To Slow Down Mount Union

Dominque Hopkins (#30) gets in on one of his team-high 15 tackles with the help of Emmett Lydon (#44)
The spectre of 95 consecutive regular season losses for the team playing a home football game against Mount Union was obstacle enough.

But turning the ball over six times only further served to haunt the John Carroll Blue Streaks in a 51-7 loss to the second-ranked team in Division III Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium.

Box Score

Mount Union, which has not lost a regular season road contest since 1994, quickly quieted the home crowd with touchdown drives on its first two possessions.

The Blue Streaks, however, would commence their best drive of the afternoon late in the first quarter after falling behind 14-0. The Blue Streaks would reach the Purple Raiders' 34-yard line as the quarter ended, but would face a fourth down and eight when the second quarter began.

Devin O'Brien would scramble away the pass rush and find Kyle Hubbard down the middle of the field. Hubbard rambled toward the end zone, but as he neared the five-yard line, he was hit from behind and fumbled the ball into the end zone, where it was recovered by Mount Union.

JCU would not threaten again until very late in the game.

In the meantime, the Purple Raiders would strike for two more touchdowns in both the second and third quarter to build a 42-0 lead.

The score would increase to 51-0 before the Blue Streaks would get on the scoreboard. After a Mount Union fumble with less than two minutes to play was forced by Luke Whitworth and recovered by Kyle Fiegel, O'Brien would score on a third-and goal play from two yards out.

Mount Union (2-0, 1-0 OAC) rolled up 537 yards of total offense, led by quarterback Neal Seaman who was 20-25 for 260 yards and three touchdowns.

John Carroll (0-2, 0-1), which lost its seventh consecutive game dating back to last season, had four defensive players reach double figures in tackles, led by a career high 15 from Dominique Hopkins.
