Night Of Achievements Carry Blue Streaks To Win Over Muskies

Joey Meyer (#14) watches as one of his school-record tying nine three-point field goals prepares to drop through the net

John Carroll head coach Mike Moran received a handshake from a well-wisher following his team's 76-62 victory over Muskingum and sheepishly admitted the Blue Streaks played a little sloppy.

Yet JCU managed to have one player tie a school record, another come within one play of a school record, and yet another surpass a significant milestone.

On a night of such achievement, the Blue Streak mentor may have to adjust his definitions.

Box Score

The Blue Streaks seemed destined to turn the game into a laugher early on, as JCU raced out to a 40-17 lead. DeAndre Richardson (Cleveland Heights, OH, Cleveland Heights)jumper with 3:41 to play in the opening half would gave John Carroll its largest lead of the game.

The basket also turned out to be the last points for the Streaks in the opening half. Counting the final three-and-a-half minutes of the first period and the first 5:43 of the second, the visiting Muskies turned a laugher into a serious matter. Wade Litt's two free throws capped a 21-8 run that pulled Muskingum to within ten points at 48-38.

Try as they might, however, the Muskies could not cut the dificit into single digits. John carroll responded to Muskingum's run with eight straight points, and kept the Muskies at bay the remainder of the game.

John Carroll (10-4, 5-2 OAC), who played in front of departed teammate Matt Crozier's family this evening, received several inspired efforts. Senior Maurice Haynes II (Cleveland, OH, Villa Angela-St. Joseph)reached 1,000 points in his career with a lay-up at the 16:59 mark of the first half. Corey Shontz established a career-high and finished one off the school mark with 12 assists.

But the big story of the night was nine three-point field goals from Joe Meyer (Mentor, OH, Mentor), who finished with a game- and career-high 29 points. Meyer tied current teammate Michael Hartnett (North Royalton, OH, Lakewood St. Edward)school record of nine three pointers in a single game which was set back on December 4, 2010.

The Blue Streaks, who were 13-26 (.500) as a team from beyond the arc, also had Haynes (14) and Hartnett (11) reach double figures.

Muskingum (6-9, 2-6 OAC), which won the battle of the boards decisively (43-32) was paced by 20 points from Kyle Clinedinst, who also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Litt and Seth Howard each chipped in 11 for the Muskies, who fell to John Carroll for the tenth consecutive time.
