JCU starts fall out strong, goes 2-0 vs Ashland and Bowling Green
The John Carroll men's lacrosse team began the 2011-2012 season on Saturday September 24
th with a scrimmage against a combined Ashland/Baldwin Wallace team at Shula Stadium. As more than half the team is new, with 14 new guys among the 25 man roster, the coaching staff was looking to see how the team came together. Although the game started slow, the Streaks offense began to click in the 2
nd quarter and led the team to an 18-8 victory. The game followed the first ever Blue Streak Showcase, a 7v7 tournament for high school players that afforded high school players the chance to see different competition and play on a college campus while the JCU players and coaches could for young talent, including a team comprised of potential JCU recruits. The tournament, won by the St. Ignatius High School team, and the fall opener made for a great day of lacrosse that will hopefully be a sign of the success ahead.
The John Carroll lacrosse team continued their fall season on Saturday (October 8) with a victory over Bowling Green State University Falcons by a score of 16-6. The road trip to BG seemed to have no effect on the Streaks playing ability as they made up for last year's loss. JCU started off the first quarter with a goal by junior #6
Chad Riley (5 goals on the day) and never trailed, as the offense went on a scoring binge and put the Streaks up 11-3 at halftime. The spree continued throughout the game with major contributions from freshman #8 Dave Brill with three goals and five assists, junior #11
Brian Jaszka with one goal and three assists, junior #9
Ryan Cox with three goals, and #4 junior
Andy Seil with one goal and two assists. Both goalies finished the game with three GA's each. Goalie #20 Andrew MacLean earned his first college win as well. Defense was led by senior captain #15
Matt Sikora and sophomore #7
Steve Epprecht. New freshman players #17
Kevin Werner and #25
Chris Smith, and sophomore #18
Ryan Drake also contributed to the stifling defense.
Overall the Streaks looked and played very well, outmatching the Falcons all game. The Navy and Gold resume their fall ball season Sunday October 23rd as the travel to Toledo take on the Siena Heights (11am) and University of Toledo (12:30) and conclude with a game against JCU alumni on Friday Oct 28
th at 6pm.
