Hoping to snap a frustrating losing streak after playing some stingy competition in recent weeks, the John Carroll University Blue Streaks traveled to Berea, Ohio, to take on the Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets.
Unfortunately for the Blue Streaks, the Yellow Jackets were an inspired bunch.
On a night which Baldwin-Wallace designated as the “Dig Pink” match (a Breast Cancer Awareness Rally being held all of October to raise awareness and funds), the host squad proved too strong by winning in three straight sets by scores of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-19.
Box Score
JCU was hoping to avenge a narrow 3-2 loss at the hands of Baldwin-Wallace during the 2010 regular season, but could not do so, giving the Yellow Jackets their second consecutive win over JCU.
Filling in at the libero position again due to an injury to starter Mel Rodriguez, junior Emily Bendzak led the Blue Streaks defensively as she recorded 24 digs in the match. Senior Kerry Fox led JCU with five kills on offense while junior Sarah Slagle and sophomore Charlotte Sykora each contributed with four kills apiece.
Baldwin-Wallace improved to 16-12 overall and 4-4 OAC while the Blue Streaks slipped to 9-17 and 0-8 in league play in what was JCU's second to last game of the 2011 season.
The Blue Streaks, who were officially eliminated from Ohio Athletic Conference tournament consideration this evening, will conclude this campaign on Saturday, October 29th at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center as JCU will play host to the visiting Capital University Crusaders at 12 p.m.
