Slow Start Stops JCU Baseball In Home Opener Against Notre Dame

Pat O'Brien turned in a three-up, three-down relief appearance against Notre Dame
John Carroll finally got a chance to play a home game after the first 14 were staged on the road.

Unfortunately, home cooking did little to change recent fortunes. A slow start sank the Blue Streaks in an 8-2 loss to neighborhood rival Notre Dame College.

Box Score

The visiting Falcons, which won a program-record tenth consecutive game, scored all the runs they would need in the first. The big blow was a two-out error that led to the final two runs of the frame.

JCU scored a run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by John Hastings (Pittsburgh, PA, Fox Chapel), but a single run in the third and two more in the fourth gave the Falcons a 6-1 lead.

Notre Dame outhit John Carroll by a slim 10-8 margin, but the Blue Streaks left 14 runners on base over nine innings compared to eight for Notre Dame.

Joe Veltri (Rochester Hills, MI, Notre Dame Preparatory) was the hitting standout on this day for the Streaks, going 3-4 with a run scored.

John Carroll used five pitchers, the most effective of which was Pat O'Brien, who record the lone 1-2-3 inning for the Blue Streaks -- setting down the only three Falcons he faced in the eighth.
