Box Scores: Game One / Game Two
In game one, the Blue Streaks fell behind 2-1 after two innings but used explosive outbursts in the third and fourth innings to put the game out of reach. After keeping B-W off the board for the first time in the top of the third inning, five JCU runners crossed home plate in the third. The Blue Streaks managed just two hits in the inning, but control issues from the Yellow Jackets pitchers aided the JCU effort.
JCU starting pitcher Bobby Peltz put another zero on the scoreboard in the Yellow Jacket fourth, and his teammates hung five more runs on the board to make it an 11-2 game.
B-W added two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth, but their comeback effort came up short in the seven-inning affair.
Peltz, making just his fifth collegiate start, picked up the win to improve to 3-2 on the year. He allowed four runs – three of them earned - in 4 1/3 innings before giving way to Vincent Trivisonno, who allowed one run in 1 2/3 innings. Robbie Belluschi closed the door by blanking B-W in the seventh.
John Carroll used a solid team effort as a number of players got in on the offensive act. Senior first baseman Chris Larry was 3-3 with a pair of runs scored and also drove in two runs. First baseman Tom Hickey and second baseman Zachary Moss finished with an identical line, going 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
Not to be outdone, the left side of the infield, featuring shortstop Johnny Hastings and third baseman Brian Benander, combined to score four runs.
In game two, back-to-back big innings again aided the Blue Streaks to victory. The home team won the second contest, 10-7.
John Carroll got on the board first with a two-run third inning. B-W cut the lead in the half with a run in the fourth, but four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth put the game out of reach.
It was a sloppy game. B-W committed three errorts and John Carroll won four in the winning effort.
As was the case in the first game, John Carroll's winning pitcher was a freshman. Jimmy Spagna worked 5 2/3 innings and allowed four runs to pick up his second win of the season. Patrick O'Brien allowed two runs in his two innings of work. Robbie Belluschi bridged the gap to freshman Doug Finley who breezed through the ninth to earn his second career save.
The top of the Blue Streaks order, freshman Dan Potter paired with veterans Benander, Hickey and Hastings, were a combined 10-17 with eight RBIs and seven runs scored.
