Dreaded Points Off Turnovers Comes Back To Haunt Blue Streaks Against Case In Football Opener

Lane Robilotto (#21) used blocks from Mike Micca (#62) and Devin Martin (#55) to score John Carroll's final touchdown of the night against Case
Box Score A year ago, it was quite evident that Case was a very difficult opponent for John Carroll.

For all those in attendance Saturday night at Don Shula Stadium, it would be hard to argue that the most difficult opponent the Blue Streaks faced was themselves.

John Carroll turned the ball over four times, including twice in the red zone, and surrendered two defensive touchdowns in dropping a hard-fought 24-17 decision to crosstown rival Case Western Reserve.

Box Score

JCU took a 7-0 lead when DaQuan Grobsmith took a swing pass and raced 29 yards for a score with 12 seconds left in the opening quarter.

It was a first quarter of lost opportunity for the Streaks, however, as John Carroll reached the one but turned the ball over on downs on its second drive, then immediately gave the ball away again after Case fumbled inside its five-yard line.

Case answered with a 75-yard run from Manny Sirce for the only offensive touchdown the Spartans scored.

Both teams missed field goals in the second quarter leaving the score 7-7 at the half.

A field goal and pick six by Ryan Ferguson in the third quarter upped CWRU's advantage to 17-7, but Kresimir Ivkovic nailed a 26-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 17-10.

Early in the fourth quarter, Ferguson struck again with a 57-yard fumble return that staked the visitors a two touchdown lead. John Carroll countered with a five-play, 60-yard drive capped by a Lane Robilotto 24-yard touchdown reception from Devin O'Brien to make the score 24-17 with 12 minutes left to play.

Those would be the final points of the night.

John Carroll had one last gasp, and actually had a touchdown called back due to an ineligible man downfield. But the game ended when JCu's final drive stalled at the ten-yard line of Case.
