Cory Rider attempts to generate some offense against Denison in JCU's first home match of 2011
Box Score The John Carroll men's soccer team dug their cleats into new turf at Don Shula Stadium for the first time Tuesday night as they faced Denison University.
But they could not dig out of a hole caused by a difficult closing ten minutes of the first half in which the Big Red scored twice on their way to a 2-0 victory in a non-conference affair under the lights.
Box Score
After a fairly even opening 30 minutes, Denison opened the scoring with a breakaway goal in the 36th minute.
But the backbreaker was a late goal that occured with 23 ticks left on the clock on a tw-on-one breakaway. That goal changed the tenor of the match as the Blue Streaks were down 2-0 heading into the locker room.
John Carroll needed to be more aggressive in the second half to keep within striking distance of Denison, and outshot the Big Red by a 10-3 margin, but could not avoid the shutout.
Blue Streaks head coach
Hector Marinaro wants to use the second half of this game build upon as the team moves forward.
“I want players who want to play hard from the opening whistle and maintain the intensity throughout the whole game.”
Denison, which finished the night with an 18-17 edge in shots, improved to 2-0-1. John Carroll slipped to 1-2 with the loss.
