Men's Soccer Settles for Tough Tie at Oberlin

Dylan Halm scored late in the first half, but Oberlin returned the favor with just 5 minutes left in the match

OBERLIN – It was a somber day at Oberlin College leading up to a North Coast Athletic Conference soccer match. Earlier Wednesday, Oberlin tragically lost a beloved professor, Pipo Nguyen Duy, and his wife in an unthinkable tragedy.

But as sports tends to do, the match provided a needed distraction from a difficult day.

In a closely contested match, John Carroll Men's Soccer and Oberlin settled for a 1-1 draw.

In the first half, the Blue Streaks largely dominated the possession and chances. The visitors poked and prodded at Oberlin's defenses, looking for an opening.

John Carroll sent a myriad of shots towards the net in the first, outchancing Oberlin, 11-2, including 4-0 on net.

Late in the first half, the Yeomen threatened to take the momentum. A couple of strong buildups yielded a couple chances for the hosts, enough to rile up the home crowd.

But in the 41st minute, John Carroll struck first. The Blue Streaks brought it up the left side, and centered to Dylan Halm. A slide tackle separated him from the ball, but Luka Pranjeta was waiting behind him, slotting a shot that was saved by the netminder. Halm slid in to meet the rebound and buried it.

Halm's massive goal before half sent the Blue Streaks into the break with a 1-0 advantage.

From the start of the second half, it was clear that Oberlin was on the hunt for a tying tally. The Yeomen tabbed their first shot on goal in the 50th minute and continued to send shots in towards Bryce Sampson.

On the opposite end, the Blue Streaks couldn't get much going. In the 81st minute, the Clevelanders got a couple chances, with a promising Halm shot that the Oberlin keeper turned away.

In the 86th minute, the Yeomen found the equalizer. On a free kick, a Blue Streak pulled down an Oberlin player in the box, leading to a yellow card and a penalty kick for the Yeomen. Michael Dolton didn't miss, tying up the game with just 4:52 to play.

Each team got chances late, including an Oberlin header off the woodwork with 41 seconds left. JCU also got a corner, but nothing came of it.

Next Up
Not all is lost for the Blue Streaks, as a win over Wabash on Saturday at Don Shula Stadium can clinch a spot in the NCAC Tournament. The match is set for 1 pm.
