Alex Vereshchagin led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 Free that would give John Carroll its biggest lead of the night against Oberlin
As case studies go, distance events proved to be a powerful force to stop in Friday night's swimming and diving dual meet between John Carroll and Oberlin
On the strength of wins in the distance events and a late sweep in the 100 Breast, Oberlin rallied past John Carroll by a 124-113 score
Results
John Carroll led by a small margin with three events to go, but the Yeomen turned a 94-91 deficit into a 120-100 lead by taking the top two sports in the 3-meter diving competition and then taking the top three places in the 100 Breast.
Even a solid win by the JCU 400 free relay could not make up the ground.
Oberlin began the night by winning the first three races, but JCU rallied and took its first lead thanks to wins by Alex Vereshchagin in the 50 Free (21.92) and
Nick Holvey in the 200 IM (2:06.56).
Holvey led a sweep that included a second-place finish
Michael Ian Goggins (2:07.84) and a third place effort by
Brendan Carey (2:13.55).
After Oberlin regained the advantage in 1-meter diving, the Blue Streaks would race out to an 80-67 lead after
Eric Davis won the 100 Fly (54.86), and Vereshchagin (47.91), Brendan Schloendorn (49.49), and
David Sved (50.89) went 1-2-3 in the 100 Free.
Unfortunately, JCU would not win another race until
Drew Edson, Zavier Augustyniak, Holvey and Schloendorn won the 400-meter free relay in 3;22.41. In between, Oberlin picked up chunks of points in the 100 Back and 500 Free to cut the Blue Streak lead to three points heading into three-meter diving.
JCU is now 5-5 overall.
