Not only did the John Carroll soccer team's current four-matchwinning streak hang in the balance on Tuesday night, the Blue Streaks were also looking to defeat the host Yellow Jackets for the second straight year. However, after solid performances between the two teams, the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
Going into the match, the Blue and Gold had outscored their opponents by a combined 9-1 during the last four matches. This was due to a mixture of good offense and a solid defense, headed by goalie
Carl Contrascier.
Close contests have been the story of the rivalry, as every match since 2007 has been decided by one goal, except for a 0-0 tie in the 2008 matchup at Finnie Stadium in Berea. The 2012 version of this rivalry was no different.
The Blue Streaks were able to get pressure on Baldwin Wallace throughout the match and outshot the Yellow Jackets 24-11 in regulation. All this pressure was for naught as the Blue & Gold were unable to score a goal on BW goalie Ryan Hullings.
The low scoring affair, which had saw no goals in regulation, needed extra time to try to find a victor. The defenses of the Blue Streaks and Yellow Jackets continued their dominance during extra time, as it went exactly the same way as the first 90 minutes of play.
With the tie, the Blue Streaks go to 8-5-2, 4-0-2 in OAC play. Additionally, the Blue & Gold have not lost a match since September 19 and are currently 6-0-2 since their defeat to Wooster.
On Saturday, the second-place Streaks will travel to Ada, Ohio to take on the first place Ohio Northern University Polar Bears for a 3:30 p.m. start. A win would propel JCU into first place in the conference with only two matches left in the regular season.
