At the end of the day, shot counts matter far less than shots that count. On that front, John Carroll played the preseason favorite Ohio Northern even up in what ended in a 1-1 tie in an Ohio Athletic Conference showdown Saturday in Ada, Ohio.

The Polar Bears had a 34-6 advantage in shots taken, but each team managed to hit the target once.

After a scoreless first period, it was the visiting Blue Streaks that struck first. In the 62nd minute, Kay Akerly scored her team-leading ninth goal of the year from about 15 feet out.

The Polar Bears answered right back, as Sami Atkinson connected with the equalizer at the 66:35 mark.

From there, behind 14 saves from JCU keeper Haley McDonald, the Blue Streaks were able to hold on to preserve an all important tie on the road.

With just two matches remaining in the regular season, the Blue Streaks (8-5-3, 3-1-3) picked up one point in the standings and are now tied for third with Mount Union. JCU will be no worse than fourth place at the end of the day pending the result between Baldwin-Wallace and Capital.

Ohio Northern (8-4-4 overall) stands in sixth place at 3-3-1 in league.
