Thor Eriksen gave the Blue Streaks all the offense they would need in the road win
Box Score
After a 3-0 blanking of Otterbein University on Wednesday, night the John Carroll men's soccer team was looking to win its second conference game in a row, and fourth win in the past five tries.
Going into Saturday afternoon's match against Marietta, the Blue Streaks were 14-5-1 all time against the Pioneers and were gunning for their third straight triumph over the Pioneers. With another good defensive effort, the JCU shut down Marietta, 1-0.
The lone goal of the afternoon came off the foot of senior midfielder Thor Erikson in the 29th minute, who was able to beat the goalie 1-on-1. The assist on the score was awarded to
Jon Smola.
While the final score was 1-0, the game itself was dominated by JCU. The Streaks outshot the Pioneers, 22-10, and limited Marietta to two corner kicks while taking 10 of their own.
Defense has been the key to the Blue & Gold's recent win streak, and Saturday's match was no different. Goalie
Carl Contrascier only had to make one save which was good enough for his second shutout in as many games.
This gives the Blue Streaks their fourth shutout of the season. Contrascier did not have to worry much about the Pioneer offense with defenders like Jeff DeMarchi and
Liam Switalski on his side.
John Carroll is now 6-5-1, and 2-0-1 in the OAC. Marietta drops to 4-7, and 1-2 in the OAC. Next up for the Blue Streaks is the Mount Union on Wednesday night in Alliance, Ohio.
