The John Carroll soccer team came into Saturday afternoon's game at Marietta hoping to pick up its first Ohio Athletic Conference victory of the 2012 season. Thanks to hat trick from sophomore midfielder Kay Akerly and plenty of offensive support, the Blue Streaks were able to accomplish that goal, beating the Pioneers 4-0.

After a 1-1 tie to Capital last Saturday and a tough 2-0 loss to Otterbein on Wednesday, the Blue and Gold were able to get the offense rolling early and often.

Junior midfielder Nicki Bohrer got the Blue Streaks on the board 29 minutes into the match from a shot 18 yards out. Four minutes later, Akerly scored her first goal of the afternoon, on a shot inside the 18-yard box thanks to a failed clearing attempt by the Pioneers.

Akerly extended the Blue Streaks' lead to 3-0 in the 50th minute on a shot that deflected off Pioneers' goalie Kaitlyn Pearse's hands. Five minutes later, Akerly netted her third goal of the afternoon, beating Pearse on a 1-on-1 shot. She now has eight goals this season.

Defensively, the Blue & Gold were led by goalie Haley McDonald with two saves and no goals allowed in her ninety minutes in net.

With the win, John Carroll brings its record to 6-5-1, and 1-1-1 in the OAC. The Pioneers drop to 3-8, 1-2 in the OAC. The Blue Streaks will travel to Alliance, OH on October 9 to take on Mount Union in their next conference match.
