Making the playoffs was out of reach for the 2012 season, but that did not mean that Saturday night's contest against Mount Union  lacked a purpose for the John Carroll Blue Streaks.

For the opening 25 minutes, the effort was quite purposeful.

In the end, however, 38 unanswered points by the #1 ranked Purple Raiders blew the game open and led to a final score of  59-17 that spoiled senior night for John Carroll at Shula Stadium.

“We battled all year, including tonight, we never gave up,” said JCU head coach Regis Scafe about his team after the defeat. “I am very proud of this team … we played with class and had a lot of adversity to overcome.”

The Blue Streaks opened the night with a lot of momentum. After the Purple Raiders muffed senior punter Mike Malisheski's booming first kick of the game, the Blue & Gold recovered the fumble to set up shop on the Mount Union 14-yard line.

The nation's top-rated  defense rose to the occasion, as it stopped John Carroll from picking up a first down, setting up a successful 25-yard Bradley Marchese field goal. The Blue Streaks took a 3-0 lead – its first over Mount Union since gaining a 30-27 advantage late in the 2001 contest.

The Mount Union offense would get to work, as Raiders quarterback Kevin Burke guided his team 75 yards down field, completing the drive with a 21 yard touchdown pass to receiver Jasper Collins.

The Blue Streaks would eventually respond, thanks to a 24-yard sack by linebacker Choe Samba on a fourth down, the offense would begin the drive on the Raiders 44 yard line.

On the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Mark Myers found senior wide reicever Lane Robilotto open for 12 yard reception. With the catch, Robilotto broke the school record for single season receiving yards, a record previously held by John Clark from his 1,045 yards caught in 2001.

“Breaking the record is very bittersweet; it's great but it was a tough night for my last football game.” Robilotto would say after the game.

Two plays later Meyers found an open Ben Madden for the score, giving the home team a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Raiders would tack on two quick touchdowns to open the second quarter, trying to seize all momentum that the Blue Streaks had found early in the game.

John Carroll would close the gap to 21-17 as Randy Greenwood scampered into the end zone on a 30-yard screen pass from Myers.

This marked the first time the Purple Raiders had given up two passing touchdowns in a regular season game since their season opener against Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 2010. The 17 points also represented the largest scoring output against Mount Union this season.

Unfortunately, the scoring would dry up for the Blue Streaks after Greenwood's touchdown at the 7:18 mark of the second quarter.

The Raiders would seize control of the game late in the second quarter, tacking on two touchdowns in the final 3:31 of the quarter, making the score 35-17 after 30 minutes.

Mount Union used its opening drive of the second half to push the lead to 25 points, and  never looked back.

John Carroll's best chance to score came midway through the third quarter when the Blue Streaks reached the Mount Union 1-yard line, but two runs on third and fourth down failed to pick up the yard. With the last bit of wind taken out of the Blue Streak sails, the Purple Raiders put the game out of reach with a methodical 99-yard touchdown drive that covered 12 plays in just under four minutes to make the score 49-17.

With the loss John Carroll would finish the season above .500 for the first time since a 7-3 campaign in 2005.

Additionally, all 25 seniors who dressed were able to get playing time in their final game as Blue Streaks.  A class that went 3-7 as freshmen was able to finish 6-4 overall and 5-4 as seniors.
