Beth Switzler was the only Blue Streak in double figures with 13 points Wednesday night
Box Score With the men's team playing in their home opener, the John Carroll University women's basketball team traveled to Alliance, Ohio to start conference play against one of the nation's best teams.
The #2 ranked University of Mount Union Purple Raiders hosted the Blue Streaks Wednesday night in a battle of the unbeatens, as both teams put their 5-0 records to the test.
After an historic start to the 2012-2013 season for the Blue & Gold, Mount Union outscored John Carroll 72-52, improving to 6-0 as JCU fell to 5-1.
A close contest early on, the Raiders led 36-27 at the half. JCU freshman guard
Erin Mog was held scoreless through the first period, and Mount used a 13-6 run early in the second half to pull away.
Though the two teams had similar success in field goal shooting, Mount Union capitalized from beyond the arc, sinking 10-of-20 3-pointers while the Streaks were held to just a 21% 3-point shooting rate.
Steals also aided Mount in securing the victory, as the Raiders used 13 takeaways-- leading to 20 turnovers for the Blue Streaks.
Beth Switzler led her team in a losing effort with 13 points and four rebounds.
Mount Union featured three players in double figures, including Rosa LaMattina with 11, Amanda Turner with 12, and Tierney Allen with 14. This team dynamic would prove to be too powerful for John Carroll down the stretch.
With this loss, the Blue Streaks fall to 25-38 all-time against the Raiders. JCU will seek revenge on Mount Union on January 23, 2013, as the Streaks look to win at home against this opponent for the first time since 2009.
John Carroll will regroup before hosting Ohio Northern at home on Saturday, December 8. The Polar Bears will take a 6-1 record into University Heights, with their last two victories coming over OAC opponents Marietta and Baldwin Wallace.
