Box Score
Trying to avoid an 0-3 OAC start for the first team since John Carroll joined the conference in 1989, the Blue Streaks traveled down to Bexley, Ohio for Capital University's Homecoming weekend.
Fortunately for the Blue & Gold, they were up to the challenge, taking home a 37-10 victory while making history in the process. Head coach Regis Scafe won his 100th career game at the collegiate level.
Senior tight end and team captain
Ben Madden (five receptions for 61 yards) accumulated 1,000 career receiving yards. The accomplishments did not end there, as wide receiver and return man Lane Robillotto (nine receptions for 139 yards) eclipsed 1,500 all-purpose yards in his two years at John Carroll.
Capital opened the game on offense behind running back Nolan Gill and quarterback Alex Nydza. The Crusaders drove down to the John Carroll 32-yard line, where kicker Travis Bosanac hit a 49-yard field goal to give Capital a 3-0 lead early.
It was all John Carroll from there.
JCU's
Truvonte Riley would return the ensuing Crusader kickoff to the Capital 45, but a slur of early Blue Streak penalties ended their first two drives. John Carroll would break through, however, as
Mark Myers found Robillotto twice on the last drive of the first quarter, before
Aramis Greenwood brought in a 16-yard touchdown reception to help the Streaks take a 7-3 lead.
In the second quarter, the Blue & Gold scored on three of their five possessions, which included a
Kresimir Ivkovic 37 yard field goal with one second left in the half.
John Carroll would not let off the gas pedal as the Blue Streaks opened up the second half with another touchdown. This time, Myers found Madden for a 25-yard score just one minute into the half. Two drives later, Myers connected with Robilotto to increase the score 37-3 late in the third.
Meyers finished 30-of-52 with 365 yards and three touchdown passes, after rushing for one in the second quarter. Senior signal-caller Mike Locke went 4-for-4 with 13 yards. Ten Blue Streak receivers found themselves open for receptions from the two quarterbacks.
Defensively, linebackers
Jimmy King,
Kevin Cope and
Ethan Jones led the Blue Streaks in tackles with eight, seven and five respectively. Defensive back
Marty Gibbons recorded the only interception and turnover of the day.
For the Crusaders, quarterback Alex Nydza went 13-of-29 for 166 yards and one touchdown to Benjamin Woycke. Alex Coleman was his favorite target with five receptions for 82 yards.
John Carroll is now 2-2, 1-2 in the OAC while Capital finds themselves 1-3, 1-2 on the season.
