Sharbaugh prepares to take the free kick that found the net and tied the score 1-1
Box Score In a Saturday afternoon women's soccer match-up, the Blue Streaks of John Carroll remained knotted up in a close game against the Crusaders of Capital. The game ended as a 1-1 tie after an exciting two overtime periods.
John Carroll knew coming into the match, that it would be a battle. Their expectations were met.
The first half was dominated by JCU as they held control of the ball for the majority of the first 45 minutes. The Blue Streaks were able to pass well and put shots on goal. After an overturned goal by
Danielle Sharbaugh, called for off-sides, JCU cranked up the intensity and pressure on defense to try and put one in the net.
The second half was exciting and competitive as both teams scored a goal. 70 minutes in, Capital's Natalie Fiorelli put a shot past JCU goal keeper
Haley McDonald. Fiorelli's goal was assisted by Mariah Richards and gave the Crusaders a one to nil lead.
John Carroll answered with goal in the 85th minute, as the freshman Sharbaugh scored on the Capital defense unassisted. Sharbaugh netted her third goal of her season after being denied earlier in the match.
As the 90 minutes of regulation expired, both teams went into overtime feeling confident. Overtime was evenly matched and exciting as both teams put shots on goal. After 110 minutes of soccer, the final whistle was blown and the game ended in a draw. The Blue Streaks keep their winning record and are now 5-4-1.
The next game for the women will be October 3rd against Otterbein in University Heights as they continue to play in conference rivals in the Ohio Athletic Conference for the remainder of the season.
