John Carroll beat Muskingum for the second time in the last 17 years.
Box Score After struggling in recent history against Muskingum University, the John Carroll University volleyball team utilized two major runs to push past the Fighting Muskies in four sets on Friday evening inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
With the 19-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-8 win John Carroll picked up its second win in the past 17 years against Muskingum. The Blue Streaks improved to 15-8, 3-2 OAC while the Muskies dropped to 10-12, 1-4 OAC.
Kit O'Shaughnessy served up back to back aces early in the first set. The reigning OAC Player of the Week stuffed Hanna Rose at the half way point giving JCU a 2-point lead over Muskingum. The Muskies responded with a 12-3 run to close out the set. Neither offense could get going early with Muskingum turning in a .079 hitting percentage and John Carroll checking in at -.068.
The Blue Streaks returned the favor right out of the gate, with a lead of 12-3 to start the set. The Muskies would not go quietly, however, as Haley Staton kill pulled Muskingum within one at 24-23.
Sarah Orlandi swung the momentum back to the Blue Streaks by rattling home the set winning kill.
The third set featured a see-saw affair as the teams traded points with 11 ties and two lead changes. JCU took command of the set, finishing with a 5-1 run led by two kills from
Alex Ehrett and one from
Leah Switalski.
Leading by two points at 8-6, the Blue Streaks hitters erupted sparking John Carroll on a 17-2 run to close out the match. Switalski led the charge with three kills and Orlandi serving up three lasers. The hitters stepped up hitting .324 for the set.
O'Shaughnessy recorded her 10th double-double on the season with 33 assists and 14 digs. Orlandi led the offense with 15 kills and added four aces.
Sara Kaminski paced the defense with 30 digs, putting her eight shy of 1,000 for her career. Joining Kaminski and O'Shaughnessy with 10 or more digs were
Teresa Noewer (14) and
Katie Cosker (13).
John Carroll faces a quick turnaround and will take on Wesley College at 4 p.m. and Frostburg State University at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19. Both matches will take place at Frostburg State University.
