John Carroll Keeps Tight Grip On First Place In OAC Men's Soccer Race With Shutout At Muskingum

Jimmy Mattina put the match away for the Blue Streaks at Muskingum

As road tests go, the initial thought would be that Muskingum would not provide much of one for John Carroll given the host school's overall record.

But given that the Blue Streaks had a record of 1-1-1 in their last three visits to New Concord and had managed just two goals in those three matches meant that Muskingum had made life tough in the past for JCU and could do so again.

The Blue Streaks used 33 shots, including ten on goal, to take charge of matters, and goals by Mariusz Trzeciak in the first half and Jimmy Mattina in the second half would prove enough to produce a 2-0 victory.

"Tonight was another great conference win against a very disciplined and organized Muskingum side," said head coach Hector Marinaro. "Every OAC game is a battle and I'm proud of our performance but we know we need to stay focused and keep improving."

This was John Carroll's seventh consecutive win.

The win pushes John Carroll's record to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

John Carroll's 12-2 mark through 14 matches is the program's best since 2001, when that year's team started 13-1 en route to an OAc regular season title and an NCAA Division III playoff appearance.

Trzeciak scored in the 30th minute after gathering a ball played through by brian potocnik and Nathan Sharbaugh.

In the second half, Mattina iced the match off a header from a free kick.

Chrisd Garbinsky made four saves for his third shutout. He is now 7-0-0 as the starting goalkeeper.
