Box Score In their first match with a national ranking number next to their name, the John Carroll Blue Streaks strived to stay perfect on the year in Ohio Athletic Conference play.
With a strong defense and a relentless offense, the home team did just that, knocking off crosstown rival Baldwin Wallace, 2-0, Wednesday at Don Shula Stadium.
It was the Blue Streaks' eighth consecutive victory and fourth consecutive shutout in its series with the Yellow Jackets.
Throughout the entire first half, JCU -- ranked #22 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national poll -- played a very aggressive style of offense. The Streaks were able to control the time of possession and only gave up one shot in the first 45 minutes of play. Along with only giving up one shot, Carroll was able to pepper BW keeper Tyler Beaton with a combined fourteen shots.
The peppering paid off in the 36th minute. Sophomore
Shaq Bridges was able to break through for the Blue Streaks with a long goal from outside of the box. Bridges' goal -- his first of the year -- came with just 9:20 left in the half and was assisted by
Brian Potocnik.
Not much had changed in the second half as John Carroll continued to dominate possession of the ball. The latter 45 minutes concluded an easy day for Blue Streaks goalie
Chris Garbinsky, as there were no shots on goal coming from Baldwin-Wallace.
Still, the one goal lead was cause for concern given the nature of soccer.
As the contest entered the final minute, Beaton made an error on a goal kick. Rushing to get the ball down field for a much needed insurance goal, the ball landed at the feet of Bridges who passed it along to his teammate
Nathan Sharbaugh. The senior found himself in a 2-on-1 with
Mariusz Trzeciak running alongside of him. After a well-timed pass, Trzeciak tapped in the final goal of the match with 34.5 seconds remaining.
The Blue Streaks finished with 23 shots compared to three from the visiting Yellow Jackets.
With the win, John Carroll improved to 13-2 on the year and 6-0 in the OAC. Baldwin Wallace fell to 6-8-3 overall and 4-2 in league play.
The next game for the Blue Streaks will be on Saturday October 26th against defending OAC champion Ohio Northern. The match, which carries many implications as far as a 2013 regular season conference championship is concerned, will commence at 7:00 p.m. at Shula Stadium.
