Justin Miller scored one of John Carroll's three second half goals.
Box Score With a chance to secure a home game for the semifinals of the OAC Tournament on the line the John Carroll University men's soccer team did not disappoint taking a 4-0 decision at Heidelberg University on Tuesday evening.
"I am very pleased with our performance tonight," said head coach
Hector Marinaro. "Heidelberg is a quality side and it's very difficult to win on their turf."
Junior
Brian Potocnik netted his 12th goal of the season finishing off a cross in the box from Mariusz Treziak for the game's first score. The goal tied Potocnik for the third-most goals in a single season in Blue Streak history and is the most goals scored in a single season since assistant coach
Dejan Mladenovic scored 11 during the 2005 season.
Already out-shooting Heidelberg 6-1 in the second half, the Blue Streak strikers broke through for three insurance goals sparked by
Michael Melfi.
Melfi, a sophomore, pushed the John Carroll lead to two off of
Nathan Sharbaugh's feed in the 72nd minute. Melfi then found freshman
Justin Miller to essentially seal the win just over three minutes later.
Kevin McKamish connected with just over one minute remaining to put the icing on the cake off of Melfi's second assist of the game.
"Melfi gave us a great spark off of the bench to help us put the game away with a crucial goal and his two assists," said Marinaro.
With shots at a premium for most of the first half both teams stepped up the offensive effort in the final 10 minutes.
Colin Curtis and Miller peppered back-to-back shots within 15 seconds of each other in the 41st minute but could not punch the ball through as Heidelberg goalkeeper Matthew Stevens came up with both saves.
The Berg tested
Chris Garbinsky early but the Blue Streak goalkeeper was up for the test turning away two first half shots.
For the game, John Carroll enjoyed a 19-9 shot advantage and a 7-2 edge on corner kicks. With the OAC Tournament looming both teams were very aggressive combining for nine offside whistles. The Blue Streaks improved to 14-3-0, 7-1-0 OAC on the season.
