Box Score The John Carroll basbeall team opened its 2013 campaign with a trip to Beckley, West Virginia to play a team from right in its own backyard.
But despite an abundance of base runners and a strong pitching performance from
Jimmy Spagna, the Blue Streaks came up on the short end against Case Westen Reserve University by a 4-3 score.
JCU struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Spartans responded quickly with three in the top of the second. The Blue & Gold tied the score at three in the fourth, but again Case would answer with a tally in the top of the fifth to provide the final score.
Spagna was the losing pitcher despite surrenduring just two earned runs.
The Streaks, who committed two errors on the day, drop to 0-1 on the young season, and will turn around to play a doubleheader against Allegheny College tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m in Beckley.
More statistics and analysis regarding the 2013 JCU baseball opener will be coming soon.
