While the Blue Streaks may not have gotten exactly what they wanted on Friday afternoon, they got a win when they needed it, taking game two from the University of Mount Union, 5-2, after dropping the opening contest by a 4-2 margin.
On a day when playing conditions were less than ideal, JCU struggled to heat up the bats early on, scoring just a pair of runs in the first game. In fact, the Blue & Gold nearly book-ended their scoring, with a run in the first and one in the sixth. In both instances, the RBI came off the bat of
Aaron Miller, who scored
Mitchell Herringshaw and
Tyler Gentile.
Jimmy Spagna overcame three Blue Streak errors and two wild pitches to throw a complete game, allowing four runs and striking out five. Herringshaw went 3-3 at the plate while JCU scattered seven hits.
In the later contest, Spagna would have his revenge.
Tied at one in the bottom of the third, Spagna launched a three-run blast well over the left center field fence to put the Streaks on top for good.
With the run support, freshman pitcher
Aaron Lapaglia chewed through the Purple Raiders' lineup to earn his fifth consecutive win to start an already blossoming career. He has now defeated four different Ohio Athletic Conference teams on the mound.
Miller and
Robby Cifelli eached chipped in two hits in the game to help JCU achieve the split.
After the two games, John Carroll finds itself alone in fourth place in the OAC at 5-3 (16-9 overall).
