Volleyball Drops Opening Match of Weekend Tournament

Box Score Looking to continue its tournament success the John Carroll University volleyball team suffered its first in-season tournament loss to host Case Western Reserve University in the opening match of the 15th annual Marcia French Memorial Tournament. John Carroll fell 20-25, 25-15, 16-25, 23-25.

Kit O'Shaughnessy continued to shine for John Carroll with her second straight double-double. The freshman finished the match with 39 assists and 11 digs. Leah Switalski led the offense with 11 kills while Jessica Kodrich and Sarah Orlandi each added 10. Sara Kaminski added 31 digs for the match.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first set but the Blue Streaks answered right back with a 12-6 run sparked by Kodrich's two aces, a kill and a block to knot the score at 12 all. Katie Cosker added a pair of her aces down the stretch but the Spartans hit .242 in the set to secure the win.

John Carroll's back row and blockers dug in during the second set to cool off Case Western Reserve University's hitters holding the Spartans to a .033 clip. Leah Switalski took charge of the block with three in the second frame. The Blue Streaks used a 6-0 run midway through the set to push the lead from three to nine with the help of four Spartan attack errors.

Case Western Reserve University took control of the net in the third set outhitting John Carroll .143 to .050 and blocking six Blue Streak attack attempts.

However, the young, energetic Blue Streak lineup had one more push in the fourth set when kills from Orlandi and Teresa Noewer plus four Spartan attack errors had JCU up 18-12. Case Western Reserve University responded with a 7-0 run to teak the lead. Orlandi briefly put John Carroll back ahead but an attack error by Noewer gave the set and match to the Spartans.

Case Western Reserve improved to 3-2 on the season while John Carroll dropped to 4-2.
