Men's Basketball Tops Heidelberg In Double Overtime Thriller

Box Score With the temperatures finally warming up enough to play the John Carroll University men's basketball team and Heidelberg did not disappoint needing two overtimes to settle their OAC affair.
 
Led by Joey Vuyancih's stellar performance the Blue Streaks outlasted the Student Princes to take a 102-93 win on Wednesday evening inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
 
The sophomore Lake Catholic product buried back-to-back baskets at the offensive end and came up with a block on the defensive end to swing all the momentum in JCU's favor at the start of the second overtime.
 
From there two free throws by Vuyancih and David Hendrickson kept it a 2-posession game in JCU's favor.
 
Two free throws by Doug Caputo had the Blue and Gold up three in the first overtime with 80 seconds remaining.

After losing at the buzzer on Saturday at Muskingum, it was almost déjà vu when Deonte Holder sank a field goal at the buzzer. However, the shot was ruled a 2-pointer by the referees after conferring.

Trailing by two with just three seconds left in regulation Simon Kucharewicz stepped up for John Carroll. The sophomore put home a layup when Vuyancih found the sophomore wide-open underneath the basket.

Down four with 11 seconds remaining Vuyancih calmly sank three free throws to put John Carroll within one. On the ensuing possession the Berg's Mike Petrie missed the second of two free throws keeping the Blue Streaks alive. Heidelberg's Frank Longhino launched up a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Vuyancih finished with a career-high 29 points while junior David Hendrickson reached 20 points for the second straight game.
Heidelberg's Deonte Holder led all scorers with 36 points.

John Carroll, the nation's ninth-ranked scoring offense entering the week reached 100 points for the fourth time this season.

The game marked the fifth overtime contest between the two teams and the second straight overtime game.

John Carroll travels to Wilmington on Saturday, Jan. 11 for a 3 p.m. tip.
