Teams typically look to their veterans to lead the way. The John Carroll University women's soccer veterans led the way on Saturday night.
After getting behind early, the Blue Streaks (8-3-1, 2-1-0 OAC) retained composure to recover and take the 2-1 win over Wilmington (6-7-0, 0-3-0 OAC) on Saturday night inside Williams Stadium.
The Fightin' Quakers' Alyssa Reule beat Blue Streak goalkeeper
Haley McDonald with a little misdirection shot into the top right corner of the net in the 10th minute.
The Blue and Gold responded with the equalizer in the 35th minute.
Kelly Kertis picked up a loose ball in the box and fired a shot off the bottom of the crossbar. The shot had just enough spin and momentum to carry into the net.
JCU nearly took the lead moments later.
Danielle Sharbaugh fired a shot from 10 yards out which was blocked before
Kay Akerly had an attempt bang off the crossbar.
Sharbaugh would put JCU up 2-1 in the 52nd minute. With the Wilmington goalkeeper out of position the junior hooked in her fourth goal of the season from near the end line. The goal tied her for the team lead.
Justina Fortson broke loose on a fast break in the 48th minute. The freshman fired off a shot but was turned away by Wilmington goalkeeper Taylor Franklin.
JCU caught a big break in the 60th minute. Shots by Wilmington's Taylor Scott and Angela Phillips both caught the crossbar. The Fightin' Quakers mounted a desperate rally in the final 10 minutes but could not bury the game-tying goal. John Carroll struggled at times to clear and possess the ball down the stretch but did enough to keep Wilmington off the scoreboard.
Wilmington's Lauren Hamrock had a prime opportunity with 30 seconds remaining with a wide-open opportunity in front of the net but zipped her shot wide.
The Blue Streaks finished with a 14-12 edge on shots. McDonald would end the match with five saves.
John Carroll returns home to host Heidelberg at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
