All Tuesday long, the radar was checked. A good amount of rain was in the forecast, but the bigger concern was whether thunder and lightning accompany the predicted precipitation.
As it turned out, the harsher variety of weather stayed away. Blessed with such good fortune, the John Carroll women's soccer team went about its business of repelling visiting Heidelberg University, 1-0, in a hard fought Ohio Athletic Conference contest at Don Shula Stadium.
The Blue Streaks certainly had their chances to strike the first blow, starting in the fourth minute as the leading scorer for the Blue Streaks, senior
Kay Akerly, hit the bar after a great pass in from
Danielle Sharbaugh.
Akerly had another chance in the ninth minute when she made a great solo run down the right wing. After cutting to the inside and taking a left footed shot it was punched away to Dre Regrut's foot, but the sophomore was called offside.
Perhaps the play of the match that will be buried in the box score took place in the 31st minute. A flurry of activity was started on a long shot by Heidelberg's Kimberly Keenan, which was initially saved on a diving stab by
Haley McDonald. With McDonald still in scramble mode, the Berg's Nicole Johnson had a chance4 at the rebound. McDonald was up to the task again, this time securing a close in rocket shot near the right post.
The score was 0-0 at the end of the opening half.
That would change relatively early in the second period.
Maggie Reilly, who had two close chances in the final ten minutes of the first half, proved the third time is the charm. After Akerly had a shot blocked by a Heidelberg defender, Reilly seized on the rebound and fired a successful shot to the right side.
From there, the Blue Streaks would control matters as the weather worsened throughout the final 45 minutes.
John Carroll, which improved to 9-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the OAC, got four saves from haley McDonald. JCU had 25 shots to just nine for Heidelberg.
The Berg fell to 3-10-1 and 0-4 in the OAC
