With the OAC regular season title still undecided, two teams in contention squared off in a mid-week matchup to determine who would control their own destiny.
Â
Seventh-ranked Mount Union swept John Carroll 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 to remain in a tie with Otterbein for first place in the OAC.
Â
In the first set, the Blue Streaks got off to a bit of a slow start, digging themselves into an early 5-1 hole. John Carroll tried to claw back but, aided by a 4-0 and a 4-1 run, Mount Union started to pull away. Yet again, the Blue Streaks fought back late in set one, using a 6-1 run to take the score from 23-14 to 24-20 but a kill by Sara Brown ended the Blue Streaks comeback attempt.
Sarah Orlandi recorded seven of her 11 kills in the frame.
              Â
The second set started off a little better for the Blue Streaks, with both teams taking turns with little runs. Tied at eight, Mount Union used a 4-0 run to take the 12-8 lead. John Carroll called a timeout, and immediately responded with a 4-0 run of its own to tie it back up at 13. A 4-1 run from Mount Union gave the Purple Raiders a little bit of separation, but that did not last too long as the Blue Streaks fought back to within one at 19-18. The Purple Raiders had another 3-0 run and the Blue Streaks could not recover late in the set giving Mount Union the set win 25-21.
Leah Svoboda and
Alexa Webber each had four kills to keep John Carroll in striking distance.
              Â
The Blue Streaks caught a break late in the set. Down 19-18, the official granted a point originally given to Mount Union to John Carroll tying up set three at 19. John Carroll would seize the momentum to lead 21-20 after a kill from
Alexa Webber. Mount Union regained its composure and used a 5-0 run to close out the match.
              Â
Orlandi had a team-high 11 kills in the match, followed closely by
Leah Switalski's 10 kills.
