Volleyball Snaps Series Cold Spell Against Otterbein With Sweep

The John Carroll University volleyball team has had a quick turnaround to its two losses thus far this year responding with a win in each of the ensuing matches. The Blue Streaks looked to have another quick turnaround following a loss to Ohio Northern on Saturday.

Standing in John Carroll's way was Otterbein, a team the Blue and Gold have not fared well against lately. The Blue Streaks (15-3, 2-1 OAC) had not beat the Cardinals (9-10, 2-1 OAC) since 2009 and have been swept four times during that span.

The tide turned on Tuesday night with JCU's 25-22, 26-24, 25-21 sweep over host Otterbein in Westerville, Ohio.

In set one of the match, the Blue Streaks and Cardinals traded off points for much of the frame. the Blue Streaks began to pull away late and won game one 25-22. Alexa Webber registered seven of her team high 13 kills, while Kit O'Shaughnesy registered 13 assists.

The Blue Streaks coasted to an early lead in set two, leading 8-2 at one point. Otterbein fought their way back and tied it at 24 before O'Saughnessy and Sarah Orlandi registered kills to win it for the Blue Streaks 26-24

Otterbein came out on fire taking a 9-1 lead early in the third set. John Carroll gradually began to fight back and were aided by a few errors from the Cardinals. Trailing 17-10 John Carroll went on a 4-0 run aided by two Otterbein setting errors and a Cardinal attack error to cut the deficit to three. After Otterbein jumped back out by five, John Carroll roared back with a 6-point run to take the lead at 21-20 behind two kills and a block from Leah Switalski. The Blue Streaks closed out the match with four straight points behind a kill and a block from Orlandi.

Webber (13), Orlandi (11) and Leah Switalski (10) combined for 34 of the Blue Streaks' 41 kills. O'Shaughnessy was solid again with 33 assists, the 13th time this season she has at least 30 assists in a match. Sara Kaminski added a match-high 24 digs.

John Carroll will host Ohio Wesleyan on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. on a non-conference match.
