No. 6 Football Heads To Alliance For Regular-Season Finale

A champion will be crowned on Saturday.

For the second straight season the Ohio Athletic Conference football regular-season champion will be determined in a top-10 showdown. The No. 6 John Carroll University football team heads to Alliance, Ohio for a 1:30 p.m. tilt with the No. 3 University of Mount Union football team on Saturday, Nov. 15. Both teams enter the game with 9-0, 8-0 OAC records.

John Carroll will be in search of its first conference crown in 20 years while Mount Union will be looking for its 23rd-straight title.

Saturday could be a special day for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll has not won a conference title since 1994, a span of 20 years. The 1994 team finished with an 8-1 OAC record and was a part of a three-way tie with Baldwin Wallace and Mount Union for the title.

The Blue Streaks have not beaten the Purple Raiders since 1989, a span of 25 years. John Carroll's lone solo OAC title came from the 1989 team, the Blue and Gold's first season as a member of the OAC.

The matchup has two of the top offenses in all of Division III squaring off with two of the nation's best defenses.

John Carroll boasts the second-ranked defense and sixth-ranked offense in Division III. Mount Union features the nation's best offense and defense.

The Blue Streaks will look to continue to be efficient on offense. John Carroll enters the game with a single-season school-record 497 points. Individually, Mark Myers needs one passing touchdown to set the single-season school-record. Currently, Myers is tied with Tom Arth at 31 touchdown passes. Arth set the mark during the 2000 campaign.

"I think efficiency is who we are offensively," said Arth. "That's who our system is built. I think we'll do a really good job moving the ball."

Defensively, the Blue and Gold enter with some momentum having recorded five takeaways in each of the last two games. John Carroll had only forced 11 turnovers in the first eight games of the season.

"The takeaways are critically important at any level of football," said Arth. "The turnover margin is probably the most important statistic. That's something that we focus on and emphasize. We work very hard at it. Hopefully we can continue that."

JCU's defense will have the challenge of limiting UMU's big plays. In last year's meeting the big plays were a key difference in the game as the Purple Raiders recorded 10 plays of 20-plus yards.

Said Arth, "Again, big plays are a big statistic. Those explosive plays are something Mount Union has hurt us on in the past. From a defensive perspective, we will try to limit that. They have some great players who will make plays. We're going to do our best to limit their big plays as best as we can."

Ticket Information
Mount Union is no longer taking advance ticket orders for the John Carroll game on November 15 but the remaining tickets and standing room will be sold starting at 10 a.m. on the day of the game.

If you have an OAC parent pass, you can come to the gates and get two tickets and purchase additional ones at that time if needed.
