Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By Kevin Smith, Graduate Assistant

Balanced Effort From Both Platoons Leads To Big Win For Men's Basketball

A key component of John Carroll University men's basketball head coach Mike Moran's platoon system is balance. The Blue Streaks had a lot of balance on Sunday.

Behind three players with 19 points John Carroll (1-1) pulled away from Centenary (0-2) to take the 109-93 win in the consolation game of the Radisson/PNC Bank Invitational on Sunday afternoon in Scranton, Pa.

Senior David Hendrickson, sophomore David Linane and freshman Tony Vuyancih each scored 19 points to lead six players in double figures. Danny Wallack (12), Ryan Farragher (11) and John Cirillo (10) all reach double figures. The Blue Streaks had three players on each platoon with over 10 points.

"Going into today's game Coach Moran challenged our guys to play unselfishly, make the extra pass and take care of the basketball," said assistant coach Frank O'Brien. "Our players did that and as a result we had a lot of great looks at the basket. It was nice to see such great balance. We weren't happy with our play against Alvernia so it was nice to see the team bounce back in such a positive fashion."

Linane nearly had a double-double finishing with nine assists on the afternoon. Vuyancih led the Blue and Gold with seven rebounds.

For the game the Blue Streaks sank 15 trifectas. It marked the most since making 15 against Victory University on November 26, 2011.

John Carroll began to gain momentum midway through the first half. Behind three straight 3-pointers, the Blue and Gold used an 11-0 run to open up a nine-point lead at 34-25 with 6:30 remaining in the opening stanza.

The Blue Streaks would never relinquish the lead.

Centenary cuts its deficit to one at 74-73 with 9:53 remaining. Enter Linane.

The sophomore was lights out down the stretch scoring 16 of his 19 points over the final 9:09. The point guard was a perfect 5 for 5 from the field down the stretch.

A layup by Farragher with 6:33 remaining built a double-digit lead for the Blue Streaks. Linane's 3-pointer with 2:42 remaining made the lead a game-high 19 points.

For the game John Carroll shot 52.1 percent from the field including 42.9 percent from behind the arc. The Blue Streaks high-tempo style of play led to a 17-4 advantage on fast break points.

Jake Hollinger was named to the all-tournament team. The senior had a double-double in JCU's season-opener on Saturday afternoon.

John Carroll will be back in action at the Hilbert Hawks Tip-Off Tourney. The Blue Streaks will play host Hilbert at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20 and SUNY-Potsdam at 7 p.m. on Friday.
