Long Layoff No Problem As Men's Basketball Rolls To 30-Point Win

Snow would not interfere with this game.

Playing for the first time in two and a half weeks, the John Carroll University men's basketball team showed no signs of rust easily cruising past Heidelberg 92-62 on Wednesday evening in Tiffin, Ohio.

"We were very concerned coming into this game because Heidelberg has been playing well and in all reality it was like opening night due to our long layoff," said assistant coach Frank O'Brien. "It is always tough to win on the road in the OAC."

The two teams battled early with Heidelberg's Cole Williams tying the score at 15 with 14:12 remaining in the first half.

From there it was all John Carroll.

The Blue Streaks jumped out on a 6-0 run capped by David Linane made it a 21-15 game with 12:29 remaining in the first quarter.

JCU added a 10-0 run to open up a 17-point lead. Heidelberg had made it a seven point game on Marcquice Taylor's jumper but it would be the last points the Student Princes would score for over the next six minutes. John Carroll's big men led the way with Jake Hollinger and Doug Caputo combining for eight of the 10 points in the run.

Said O'Brien, "It was a great start for our two big men. Both came out and played with a ton of energy."

The Blue and Gold netted a second 10-0 run to break the game wide-open taking a 46-21 lead with 1:52 remaining in the first half. JCU had a balanced attack with four players scoring during the stretch.

A dunk from Hollinger put JCU up by 31 with 17:29 remaining in the game. The Blue Streaks' lead would not fall below 30 until the 4:14 mark.

Caputo led John Carroll with 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds. The Blue Streaks had four players in double figures with Hollinger (12), Ryan Farragher (10) and Wallack (10) joining Caputo in double digits. Sophomore David Linane would finish with a game-best seven assists.

John Carroll shot 49.3 percent from the field while holding Heidelberg to 33.3 percent.

The Blue and Gold remain on the road with a 1 p.m. tilt at Capital on Saturday, Dec. 6.
