Allegheny had more race wins, but John Carroll had the depth, the relays and the divers to produce a 123-102 win on the road in a non-conference meet Friday night in meadville, Pennsylvania.
ResultsThe Blue Streaks had just five first place efforts against the Gators, but in the races they did not win, scored enough points through depth to with stand the Allegheny charge.
JCU opened with a win in the 200 Medley Relay, as
Nick Bockanic,
Michael Goggins,
Corey Kehm, and
Gabe Nock touched in a time of 1:40.69. Allegheny, however, was disqualifed and scored no points in the lead off race.
The Gators took the next four races, but the unopposed tandem of
John Liber and Doug Hinchen tallied 13 points in 1-meter diving, putting the Blue Streaks ahead, 54-46, through six events.
John Carroll got its only individual swimming win of the night, and it was arguably the most dramatic race of the night.
Brian Hulseman beat fellow frosh Frank Chen of Allegheny by .06 of a second in the 100 Fly, 54.26 to 54.32.
That win, along with a third place finish by Kehm and a fourth place showing by
Jacob Crain, upped the Blue Streak advantage to 68-51.
The Gators again mounted a charge, and pulled to within 90-86 with three events remaining. But another Liber-Hinchen sweep in 3-meter diving, and a relay win in the night's final race -- the 200 Free Relay -- was enough to keep the host team at an arm's length.
The quartet of
John Scantling,
Stephen Attewell, Kehm and Hulseman won the 200 Free Relay in 1:31.74, almost four seconds ahead of the Gators' "A" team.
The victory moves the Blue Streaks' record to 2-3 for the season.
