The last time John Carroll and Capital met on a volleyball court, it was less than two weeks ago. If Thursday night's Ohio Athletic Conference tournament semifinal round match-up is anything like that October 25 clash in Bexley, seat belts may be needed as a roller-coaster ride may be in the offing.
It took two hours and 15 minutes and 215 points to decide matters, but the Blue Streaks prevailed in five sets, claiming the ultimate frame by a 15-12 count.
That win as much as any in the 2014 regular season looms large in how John Carroll secured the #2 seed in this year's OAC Tournament -- the highest t
he Blue Streaks have been seeded since earning the #2 seed in 1994.That loss may have also served to spur Capital as well. Proof they could play with anyone, the Crusaders have since knocked off Baldwin Wallace just to qualify for the tournament as the #6 seed, then pulled a stunner Tuesday night by elimnating third-seeded Otterbein on the road in straight sets.
The upstart Blue Streaks host the upset-minded Crusaders on Thursday, November 6, at 7:00 p.m. at the DeCarlo Varsity Center
Thursday night's OAC semifinal match will be covered with live video and live stats. With a berth in the OAC Championship match on Saturday on the line, it is worth noting both teams have been absent from the finals for quite a while -- Capital has not been back since winning the crown in 2005, while the Blue Streaks' last appearance dates back to 1995.
Top-seeded Mount Union hosts #5 seed Ohio Northern in Thursday's other semifinal round match-up. The winners of the two semifinals will meet on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the site of the highest remaining seed.
The Blue Streaks are led by an attack featuring three of the top five hitters in the league --
Leah Switalski (2.94 kills per set, 3rd in OAC),
Sarah Orlandi (2.85, 4th) and
Alexa Webber (2.82, 5th). Orlandi is also third in the conference with a .312 hitting percentage.
Kit O'Shaughnessy is second in the OAC with 10.05 sets per game, while Sara Kamisnki is fourth in digs per set at a 5.57 clip.
John Carroll is 9-15 all-time in OAC Tournament play, winning the title in 1993 and finishing as runner-up 1994 and 1995.
