Women's Basketball Knocks Off Second Nationally Ranked Opponent Of Season

Winning on the road in the Ohio Athletic Conference is never easy, especially at Wilmington.

John Carroll would win 67-57 on Saturday afternoon for just the third win at Wilmington in program history. The Blue Streaks' defense forced 27 Lady Quaker turnovers.

In a battle of top of the top defensive teams in the conference, neither team could get going offensively in the early part of the game. John Carroll was the first team to reach double-figures on Erin Mog's jumper nearly nine minutes into the game.

Emily Taylor led John Carroll to a 36-30 halftime lead. The senior scored 13 points in the first half including the Blue Streaks' first six of the game. She would finish with a game-high 20 points.

"Emily had big plays for us," said head coach Kelly Morrone. "She is just so tough. Her athleticism combined with her fight makes her a dangerous player that commands attention at both ends of the floor."

Taylor would put John Carroll up 12 with 3:12 remaining in the first half capping a 6-0 run for the Blue and Gold. Twenty-second ranked Wilmington responded with a 10-0 run to make it a 3-point game with 39 seconds remaining in the half.

There was no shortage of offense to start the second half with John Carroll opening up a 10-point lead with Katlyn Spahar capping a 6-0 Blue Streak run with 17:54 remaining.

Wilmington made it a two-point game at 51-49 with 6:25 remaining. John Carroll responded with a 6-2 run led by four points from Beth Switzler to push JCU's lead to six with just over three minutes remaining.

The Lady Quakers cut the Blue Streaks' lead to two again with just over a minute remaining. John Carroll clinched the game with a 6-0 run to open up an eight-point lead with 41 seconds remaining.

Spahar joined Taylor in double figures with 11 points.

John Carroll improved to 7-1, 2-1 OAC while Wilmington fell to 6-1, 2-1 OAC. The win marked the second nationally-ranked team John Carroll has beaten this year.

Said Morrone, "THe OAC has had several teams in and out of the top 25 this year and I suspect that will continue to happen throughout the year. That's why this conference is so fun. Everyone is good across the board. It's important to have a win like Ithaca in our pocket to draw from experiences that our players will face in the OAC."

The women's basketball team returns home to take on Marietta on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 3 p.m.
