Back in the Division III Football Championship quarterfinals for the first time since 2002, the John Carroll University football team (11-1) heads to Alliance, Ohio to take on Mount Union (12-0) at noon on Saturday, Dec. 6. The two teams met three weeks ago with Mount Union hanging on for the 31-24 win to claim the OAC Championship.
Eager for a rematch, John Carroll will look to get off to a better start than the November 15 meeting. Mount Union jumped out to a 24-7 halftime lead before John Carroll responded with 17 straight points in the second half to tie the game at 24 on
Wes Keller's 20-yard field goal with 3:17 remaining.
Along the way to its third overall quarterfinal appearance, the Blue and Gold have enjoyed a banner year.
The Blue Streaks have set numerous school records this year. John Carroll's 598 points rank first all-time in school history. Quarterback
Mark Myers set the single-season (38) and career (91) marks for most touchdown passes.
Tommy Michals became JCU's all-time single-season leader in rushing yards (1,413).
Aramis Greenwood became JCU's all-time leader in touchdown receptions and currently has 27 while
Kresimir Ivkovic set the single-game and career extra point marks, the career field goal mark and matched his own single-season extra point milestone.
Mount Union is making is 23rd straight appearance in the national quarterfinals this week. The Purple Raiders set a Division III Football Championship record with a 67-point victory last week in a shutout over Washington & Jefferson.
Overall, Mount Union leads the all-time series 29-2-2 including a 2-0 mark in the NCAA Football Championship. The Purple Raiders defeated the Blue Streaks 59-7 in the 1997 quarterfinal and 57-19 in the 2002 semifinal.
Under second year head coach
Tom Arth's tutelage, John Carroll has posted a 20-3 record overall and advanced to the NCAA Division III Football Championship for back-to-back years for the first time in program history.
Now the former All-American will look to guide his team back into the semifinals for the first time since his senior year.
The winner advances to the national semifinals and will take on the winner of the Hobart-Wesley matchup on Saturday, Dec. 13 at a time and site to be determined.
TicketsNo more advance tickets are being sold for Saturday's football game but there are still seats available in the open stands.
No one will be turned away if the seats sell out then standing room only tickets will be sold.
Tickets are $8 each.
The ticket window will open at 9 a.m. and gates to the stadium will open at 10:30 a.m.
A reminder that every seat inside Mount Union Stadium is assigned and there is no general admission seating.
