Box Score Faced with another mid-week non-conference test in 2012 and 2013 NCAA participant College of Wooster the John Carroll University baseball team looked to stay hot with a key doubleheader at Marietta on deck this weekend.
John Carroll battled back from an early 3-run deficit but Wooster responded four runs between the seventh and eighth innings to take the 9-4 lead on Tuesday afternoon at Art Murray Field in Wooster, Ohio.
Down 3-0 John Carroll tied the game in the top of the fourth inning.
Bobby Sabatino reached on an error to start the inning and would come in to score on
Jimmy Spagna's RBI groundout.
Tyler Gentile added a single to bring in
Chet Lauer. The Blue and Gold would tie the game on
David Crowley's sacrifice bunt which plated Gentile.
Wooster countered with senior Jarrod Mancine clubbing a 2-out triple into the right field corner to put the Fighting Scots back on top 5-3.
Wooster struck for three runs in the bottom of the second to open up the early 3-0 lead. Junior Frank Vance hit the first of two Fighting Scot triples to put Wooster on the board. The Fighting Scots added their third run of the frame on a RBI groundout by Craig Day. Wooster threatened for a big inning but Sabatino helped his defense out with a diving stop.
The Blue and Gold picked up a run in the eighth inning. Spagna drew a 1-out walk and advanced to third when Gentile reached via error.
Mitchell Herringshaw make it a 2-run game at 6-4 plating Spagna with a sacrifice fly.
Wooster added three insurance runs in the eighth to open up a 9-5 lead. Vance scored the Fighting Scots first run of the inning sliding past the glove of
Jacob Schriner on a suicide squeeze attempt. Eddie Reese had Wooster's only hit of the inning for the second inning of the game where the Fighting Scots had three runs but only one hit.
John Carroll's defense helped its pitchers out on the afternoon.

Mark Materise gave up a leadoff double. Additionally, Sabatino made two diving stops on balls hit up the middle.
"Mark's was a great play," said head coach
Marc Thibeault. "We got ahead 0-2 and threw a very hittable pitch. Mark picked us up by being in position and turning the much-needed double play. We had a couple of good plays up the middle today."
John Carroll was held to four hits on the afternoon.
Andrew Doring took the loss falling to 1-2. The junior worked three innings on a staff day allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four.
Matt Felvy improved to 5-2 pitching three innings of 1-hit relief.
Wooster improved to 20-11 while John Carroll fell 18-11.
John Carroll remains on the road to take on Marietta on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m. John Carroll also plays at Denison on Sunday, April 27 in two 7-inning games beginning at 1 p.m.
