Volleyball Makes Quick Work Of Kenyon As Blue Streaks Out To Best Start Since 1993

Box Score The John Carroll Blue Streaks needed only 57 minutes to top Kenyon as they extended their win streak to seven games – the team's  longest since 2010. 

A strong combination of offense and defense lead the John Carroll Blue Streaks to sweep the Kenyon Ladies, 25-18, 25-6, 25-13.

Head coach Laura Rodeffer utilized 16 different players to complete John Carroll's sixth sweep in its last seven matches.

The victory also moved John Carroll to 9-1 on the year, marking just the third time in over 40 years of Blue Streak volleyball team has opened up a season winning at least nine of their first ten matches. The only other occasions were 1992 (when JCU began the year 18-0 en route to a program best 33-3 record) and 1993 (when JCU began the campaign 9-1 and finished 34-4 as well as netting the school's first NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship appearance).

In their only match of the day at its own John Carroll Invitational, the Blue Streaks came out firing and  won the first set, 25-18. Sophomore Leah Switalski led the team in kills with six.

After trading blows early on,  JCU executed a 3-0 run to put the pressure on Kenyon and take an 11-8. From there, JCU essentially traded two points for every one from Kenyon. Sophomore Katie Cosker, the OAC leader in aces per set, closed the match in typical fashion with an ace.

With a strong opening performance in the first set, the Blue and Gold looked to come into the second set in dominating fashion and they did just that. With John Carroll leading 5-3 Natalie May orchestrated a 14-0 run to give the Blue Streaks a 19-3 lead in the second set. May had three aces during that pivotal stretch. John Carroll proceeded to win the set 25-6, holding Kenyon to single digits. The most recent time previous in which a JCU team held an opponent to six or fewer points was on September 1, 2013 against Mt. Aloysius.

After the dominant display of the second set, the Blue Streaks aimed to close out the match quickly . JCU opened the third set on a 7-0 run led by Kit O'Shaghnessy , and were never threatened.

Leah Switalski led the team with nine kills and Sara Kaminski led the team in digs with 19.

O'Shaghnessy had a impressive 31 assists in being named to the all-tournament team along with teammate Sarah Orlandi

JCU will look to add to their win streak this Wednesday at Case Western. The match will start at 7:00 p.m.
