Men's Soccer Cruises To 6-0 Shutout Over Geneva

JCU tied its season-high with six goals.
Box Score On a festive Homecoming Saturday in University Heights, the John Carroll University men's soccer team began the day with a definitive 6-0 victory over Geneva College.

Freshmen Jacob Lombardo and Dalton Browsky teamed up to provide two of the tallies in a JCU's big win on a beautiful day at Don Shula Stadium in front of excited alumni and fans.

"We felt good going in after a great week of practice," Browsky said. "We're roommates, so we definitely have a little bit of chemistry."

The Blue Streaks advanced to 7-3 on the season after their fourth straight win.

JCU controlled the tempo from the get-go. JCU recorded three shots in the first five minutes of the contest, putting pressure on the Geneva defense.

After some near misses, the Blue Streaks broke through in the 15th minute. Streaking down the right side of the field, Lombardo found a cutting Browsky in the middle, who slid by a defender and fired it into the bottom left corner of the net.

The Golden Tornadoes repeatedly tried to counter, but every time a Geneva forward found some running room, JCU's defense swarmed the ball and closed the opening. The Golden Tornadoes only managed four shots – one on goal – in the first half.

On the opposite end of the field, the JCU offense had no trouble generating shots. The Blue Streaks' efforts paid off in the 33rd minute. On a corner kick, Brian Potocnik sent a low line drive towards the middle. The ball pinballed in front of the net before Mariusz Trzeciak boxed out a defender and poked it into the bottom left corner of the net past Geneva keeper Bryan Butler. Trent Guy and Colin Curtis were each credited for an assist on the play.

At halftime, the Blue Streaks held a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard and a 12-4 advantage in the shot department.

The second half began much like the first, with JCU controlling the ball and the tempo.

Five minutes into the second period, the Blue Streaks struck again. Lombardo dribbled the ball past several Geneva players, weaving his way down the right sideline before sending a beautiful pass to Browsky. Standing right in front of the net, all Browsky had to do was tap it into the net for his second goal of the afternoon and fourth of the season.

The Golden Tornadoes did not surrender after falling behind 3-0. Geneva worked hard on offense to generate opportunities. Geneva's most promising chance came in the 62nd minute. Josh Brenize weaved his way towards the net and fired a shot that barely missed wide left.

After allowing some solid Geneva chances, the Blue Streaks turned the tables and turned up the pressure on the Golden Tornadoes. In the 70th minute, the Blue and Gold broke the Geneva defense. Liam Switalski found Justin Miller streaking down the field, all alone with a single Geneva defender. After receiving a perfect pass from Switalski, Miller beat out his opponent and rocketed a shot past Butler into the bottom right corner of the net. The tally was Miller's second of the season.

Trailing 4-0, the Golden Tornadoes kept fighting. The JCU defense remained stout and maintained the shutout.

"Jimmy Mattina was solid in the back on defense for us," head coach Hector Marinaro said. "He and Shaq [Bridges] make a great tandem back there. We have a lot of unsung heroes on this team."

With seven minutes remaining in the contest, the Blue Streaks added another goal for good measure. Kyle Wisniewski buried his shot into the bottom left corner of the net, upping JCU's lead to 5-0.
The Blue and Gold rounded out the scoring in the 87th minute, as Karol Boryka notched his second goal of the year on an assist from Jesse Marinaro.

"It was great to have a great performance here at homecoming and show the alumni and everybody what John Carroll soccer is all about," Switalski said.

JCU begins Ohio Athletic Conference play next Saturday at home, hosting Ohio Northern for a 7 p.m. match at Don Shula Stadium.
