Delay Does Little To Faze JCU Men's Soccer As Streaks Top TCNJ In Seashore Classic

Kevin Pachuta opened the scoring in the Blue Streaks' 2-1 victory over the College of New Jersey
Box Score It was a delay in the first game that forced a late start to the second, but the change in time did little to faze the visiting Blue Streaks.

Using a quick goal in the first half by Kevin Pachuta, a second half goal by Jimmy Mattina proved to be the difference as John Carroll edged the College of New Jersey, 2-1, Friday night in Galloway, New Jersey.

Facing a team from the Garden State at the Richard Stockton Seashore Classic, the Blue Streaks were the definitive visiting team. Adding to the challenge was an hour delay caused by a transportation issue that affected the first match of the tournament. Due to a highway accident that affected traffic and the arrival time of the other "visiting team" -- Brooklyn College -- John Carroll and TCNJ did not get underway until 8:30 p.m.

Once the game began, the Blue Streaks wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. Kevin pachuta took a pass from Matt Brodman and scored his second goal of the season with a rocket shot from the left side. Despite a 10-2 shos edge and a 4-0 corner kicks advantage in the first half, John Carroll could not build upon the 1-0 lead and took that margin into the break.

The Lions needed just 24 seconds to get the equalizer at the start of the second period, as Sean Etheridge found the back of the net.

The score remained 1-1 until the 67th minute, when Mattina headed in a corner kick sent forth by Brian Potocnik for what proved to be the game winner. It was Mattina's first career game-winning goal.

John Carroll wound up taking 14 shots to just five for the College of New Jersey in improving to 2-1 on the season. The Lions dropped to 2-2 with the loss.

The Blue Streaks will face host Richard Stockton in the de facto championship game on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Richard Stockton blasted road weary Brooklyn, 6-0, in the opener.
