Three teams entered the day tied atop the league standings. By the day's end only a maximum of two teams would be tied at the top of the standings. The No. 18 John Carroll University women's basketball team wanted to be one of those teams.
John Carroll knocked off its first place counterpart Baldwin Wallace 62-52 inside the Rudoph Ursprung Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
The early stages of the OAC battle consisted of back and forth scoring between JCU's Katlyn Spahar and the balanced attack of the Baldwin Wallace offense. The Blue Streaks could not attain a lead greater than five in the first 10 minutes of play thanks to the Yellow Jackets top scoring defense.
JCU gained a 25-16 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half thanks to a 3-pointer by Shmoo Pryor. The freshman guard teamed with Spahar as the duo lead the team in first half scoring with eight and 12 points respectively. The pair of first place teams entered half time in a low scoring affair with the Blue Streaks holding a 30-21 lead.
The teams continued to trade baskets in the second half as Beth Switzler scored her first points of the game with 15:20 left to play. The Blue and Gold were able to hold their lead until the 11 minute mark when BW's Janaya Feaster and Sydney Clark hit a pair of 3-pointers to give the Yellow Jackets a 44-40 lead.
Both teams went on a scoring drought between the eight and five minute marks until Sarah Cairnie connected on a jump shot with 5:32 to give the Blue Streaks a slim 48-47 lead.
Spahar and Switzler took over from there as their offensive rebounding and scoring efforts gave JCU a much-needed five-point lead with only three minutes left to play.
The rest of the game was dominated by the Blue Streaks as Spahar connected on another clutch three-pointer with 1:32 remaining in the second half. The basket was part of a 17-0 Blue Streak scoring run that propelled the team to its 15th victory of the season. The win was not only the ninth in a row for JCU, but it was also the first win over Baldwin Wallace since February 2, 2011 when the team won 75-73.
Spahar led the team with 26 points with Emily Taylor contributing 11. Cairnie and Switzler each contributed 10 rebounds in the crucial OAC match.
John Carroll will host Wilmington College in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m.
