As snow and hail fell in University Heights on Saturday, the Blue Streaks football team turned up the heat on the road.
Â
Ro Golphin dominated on the ground for 203 yards and two touchdowns as the Blue Streaks defeated Marietta, 35-10, at Don Drumm Stadium.
Â
Golphin became the first JCU running back to top 200 rushing yards since Tommy Michals did so on Nov. 8, 2014 against Otterbein.
Â
John Carroll improves to 5-1 overall, and 4-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Pioneers fall to 1-5 on the season, and 1-4 in the OAC.
Â
Jake Schaefer completed 21-of-37 passes for three touchdowns and one interception. John Carroll gained 434 total yards in the contest.
Â
Golphin opened the scoring in the first quarter on a three-yard run. Both defenses settled in, and the score remained 7-0 until midway through the second quarter. Schaefer found Nico James for a 21-yard connection with 7:14 left in the half. The touchdown toss gave the Blue Streaks a 14-0 lead.
Â
Four minutes later, Schaefer connected with Marshall Howell for a 19-yard score. The junior would finish the day with five catches for 91 yards. Howell is the fourth receiver in program history to break 2,000 career receiving yards.
Â
The Blue Streaks caught a break when a pick-six by Marietta's Ben Hawkins was called back on a personal foul with 0:37 left in the half. They held a 21-0 advantage at the half.
Â
Marietta got on the board with a field goal late in the third, but the Blue Streaks extended the lead to 28-3 on a 13-yard pass from Schaefer to Howell. Roger Bush caught a 30-yard pass from Nick Hineman to get within three scores, but a two-yard Golphin run with 7:13 to go slammed the door at 35-10.
Â
John Carroll turned the ball over on downs three times, but a strong defensive effort kept Marietta from capitalizing beyond the one field goal. Â
Â
Andy Bryan led all Blue Streaks with eight tackles, and four JCU defenders sacked Hineman.
Â
John Carroll is back in action next Saturday, when they take on Capital University in Bexley at 1:30 p.m.
