Much of the recent success of the John Carroll volleyball team can be attributed to the resilience of its senior class.
Â
On Saturday afternoon, two of those seniors made yet another mark on the program's history books.
Â
Sara Kaminski recorded her career 2,000th dig and Sarah Orlandi notched her 1,000th career kill as the Blue Streaks defeated Marietta in three sets (25-16, 25-19, 25-12) at the DeCarlo Varsity Center on Saturday.
Â
"[The seniors] came in with me as a first-year head coach," said head coach Laura Rodeffer after the match. "They took a chance on John Carroll, and they trusted that we would build. It's fun to watch them grow as athletes and people."
Â
Orlandi finished with 16 kills; Kaminski ended the day with 20 digs. Kit O'Shaughnessy filled up the stat sheet once again, recording 35 assists.
Â
The Blue Streaks improve to 12-11 overall and 3-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play on the season.
Â
Orlandi reached her milestone on the third point of the match. Her kill gave the Blue Streaks a 2-1 lead. John Carroll rolled to a 25-16 win in the first set. Orlandi recorded six kills in the set, while Katie Cosker had seven digs. Both teams had six errors.
Â
The Blue Streaks won the second set, 25-19. Alexa Webber had four kills in the game, and Kayla Musso added two digs. Orlandi notched five more kills. Kaminski reached her milestone on the final point of the second set, as her eighth dig brought her to 2,000.
Â
John Carroll came out firing in the third set, leading the Pioneers, 14-4, at one point. They closed out the match by a final score of 25-12.
Â
Kaminski and Orlandi both called their milestones team honors. "I can't do what I do without Sara, Cosker and Kit," Orlandi said. "It is a big reflection on our back row; it is really cool to break records with my best friend."
Â
"It's cool to reach this at home on the same day," Kaminski said. "There are so many others on this team that can do the same thing when they're seniors."
Â
Rodeffer also commented on the back-to-back sweeps at home for the Blue Streaks. "Home hasn't been the friendliest environment for us this year, it's fun to see them reaching their potential here."
Â
John Carroll travels to Berea to face Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday evening before returning home for Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 24.
