110 Minutes Not Enough As Streaks And Jackets Battle To A 1-1 Draw

Records get thrown out the window in a rivalry match and offense can be at a premium. Both adages proved to be true in Wednesday afternoon's match between John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace as 110 minutes of soccer ended in a 1-1 tie.

After a scoreless battle in the first half, senior Danielle Sharbaugh scored in the 78th minute, with an assist from sophomore Justina Fortson. This marked Sharbaugh's first goal this season and the 11th of her career.

Less than four minutes later, sophomore Courtney Schutz fired a shot for the Yellow Jackets. Sophomore Rhianna Guarnera made the initial save but freshman Rachel Bender was quick to pounce. She cleaned up the rebound, putting Baldwin Wallace on the board for the 10th time this season.

The remaining time in the game was hard fought in overtime. Both teams' defenses kicked into double time prohibiting any goals.

Baldwin Wallace led in shots, 17-15, while JCU had the edge on shots on goal, 12-9. Guarnera had eight saves in goal, and Yellow Jackets senior Emily Tallmadge totaled 11.

John Carroll moves to 4-10-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the OAC, picking up an all important point in the league standings in its bid to qualify for ninth consecutive OAC postseason tournament. Baldwin Wallace moves to 9-4-4 and 3-1-2 in league play.

For John Carroll, this was the tenth consecutive match that ended in either a victory or draw against Baldwin Wallace. The Yellow Jackets last defeated John Carroll by a 2-1 count in 2006. The series is now 6-0-4 since that match in JCU's favor.

The Blue Streaks will travel to Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday to take on Capital University.
