Homecoming Heartache As Late Score Knocks JCU From Ranks Of Unbeaten

The script was going along nicely for John Carroll. A 17-point lead, all phases of the game going well, and a boisterous Homecoming crowd braving the rain and wind at Don Shula Stadium.

Playing the role of villian was Ohio Northern, and the Polar Bears gladly obliged, scoring ten points in the final quarter, including the winning points on a 4th-and-20 play, to steal a 30-27 vicytory away from the Blue Streaks.

The loss was John Carroll's first at home since an NCAA playoff defeat in 2013 to St. John Fisher, and the first loss of the 2015 campaign.

The Blue Streaks began well, forcing turnovers on two of Ohio Northern's first three drives. The second proved costly, as a fumble turned into seven points for the home team. On the very next play after the Ohio Northern miscue, Jake Schaefer found Marshall Howell for a 25-yard touchdown. Jake Vivonetto's PAT made it 7-0 with 6:21 to play in the opening quarter.

Vivonetto would add a 31-yard field goal bacefore the end of the quarter to give JCU a 10-0 lead after on period of play.

JCU had the ball for over ten minutes in the opening quarter.

The Blue Streaks increased their lead to 17-0 at the 7:40 mark of the second quarter when Schaefer hit Nico James for five yards and a touchdown on a third-and-goal play.

The lead looked safe until Ohio Northern stunned the partisan crowd with an innocuous screen play that turned into a 69-yard touchdown from Will Freed to Justin Magazine.

Ohio Northern looked to score again in the final seconds off the half, but a pass toward the end zone from Freed was tipped in the air by Mason McKenrick and intercepted by Reese Armstrong to leave the score at 17-7 at intermission.

The second half looked like much of the same when McKenrick intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown.

Vivonetto's extra point made the score 24-7 with 14:01 left to play in the third quarter.

JCU then forced a three-and-out, but in what in hindsight looked to be a game changer, an unsportmanlike conduct call gave Ohio Northern new life, and the Polar Bears capitalized with a touchdown drive that covered 76 yards in 12 plays.

A missed extra point left the score 24-13.

John Carroll would score its final points of the game thanks to a Jordan D'Orazio 40-yard punt return that set up Vivonetto for a 39-yard field goal with 1;21 to play in the third.

Ohio Northern responded again and scored a touchdown in a drive that took just over one minute to complete, the big play a 42 yard pass from Freed to Reed Allen. Going into the fourth quarter, JCU still held a 27-20 lead.

The Blue Streaks would run just seven offensive plays in the final quarter as Ohio Northern closed in with a field goal, and then took the lead for good with just over four minutes to play when Freed found Justin McCray for a 35-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-20.

JCU went three-and-out on its next possession, punted, and never got the ball back as Ohio Northern ran out the clock,

Ohio Northern, which had just 52 yards of total offense until the 69-yard screen play that went for a touchdown late in the second quarter, outgained John Carroll 431-326.

Schaefer went 22-48 for 216 yards and two touchdowns. Howell was the top receiver with 79 yards and a touchdown on eight catches.
