It is becoming a habit for John Carroll to score at least 100 points in the second game of the season. It happened in 2013 against Alma, and again in 2014 against Centenary.
On Sunday, John Carroll topped the century mark in a 100-88 victory over host St. Mary's College of Maryland to capture the title at the Dan Greene Memorial Invitational.
In a battle of NCAA Division III playoff teams from a year ago, the offenses lit up the scoreboard early and often. First it was John Carroll that surged to a lead, as a
Simon Kucharewicz made a lay-up at the 15:10 mark to give the Blue Streaks a 15-7 advantage. The host Seahawks responded with a massive 22-7 run over the next six minutes to take what would be its largest lead of the game. A Tanner Brooks three-pointer with 9:14 to play in the half put the home team ahead, 29-22.
Just six seconds later,
Will Starks answered with a three-pointer of his own to stem the tide. From there, the first half was a back-and-forth affair which ended with the two teams knotted at 50-50.
The Blue Streaks shot out of a cannon in the second half, both offensively and defensively.
Doug Caputo caused a turnover on the first Seahawks possession to set the tone, leading to a three ball by Starks. That started a 10-0 run over the opening four minutes for John Carroll that gace the visitors a lead they would not relinquish. Over that span of time, JCU forced five turnovers as St. Mary's could only get off one field goal attempt.
The closest the Seahawks would get was six points on two occasions the rest of the way. The second of those was with 52 seconds left, after Brooks made a lay-up to cut the JCU lead to 94-88.
Danny Wallack released off the make, however, and scored an easy lay-up at the other end to push the JCU lead back to 96-88. St. Mary's did not score the rest of the way.
Starks was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player as he scored a team-high 26 points for John Carroll, which improved to 2-0. Starks was 9-13 from the field, including 7-9 from three-point range.
Antonio Vuyancih added 19 points, 17 of which came in the first half. He was 5-5 from the field, 3-3 from three-point range, and 4-4 from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes.
David Linane, who was also named to the all-tournament team, and Wallack each had 12 points as the Blue Streaks shot 16-26 (.615) from three-point range in the game.
Brooks led St. Mary's (1-1) with a game-high 34 points.
