Kelly Morrone and the John Carroll Blue Streaks rolled to a 77-42 victory in the consolation game of the Betty Abgott Invitational Saturday afternoon in Buffalo, New York.
The defense proved so overwhelming that the Tomcats scored just six points in the final quarter.
For all intents and purposes, JCU took control of this game in the opening quarter, racing out to a 31-15 lead. Getting production from four different players, the Blue Streaks scored 12 of the first 14 points and never looked back.Â
John Carroll had the lead up to 19 at one point in the opening half, but Thiel did make a run. When Hannah Stoneman scored on a lay-up with just under three minutes to play, the Tomcats had trimmed the JCU lead to 33-23. Quick to respond, the Blue Streaks got a three-point play from
Madi Steiner to jump start a 7-2 run to close out the half that gave John Carroll a 40-25 lead at the break.
A 16-3 run during the third quarter sealed the win.
While defense dictated the outcome, the Blue Streaks got rolling on offense. In particular,
Katlyn Spahar had a monster day as she tied a tournament record with 33 points. She finished 11-21 from the field, 3-5 from three-point range, and 8-9 from the free throw line.Spahar was named to the all-tournament team.
Shmoo Pryor added 11 as John Carroll improved to 2-1 on the season. The Blue Streaks werre 29-68 (.426) from the field for the game, and won the rebounding battle, 47-37.
Thiel, which dropped to 0-4, was led by Kayla Welty who scored nine points.
