The John Carroll women's basketball team was trailing by just five heading into the locker room despite a difficult first half from the floor. Unfortunately for the Blue Streaks, the Capital Crusaders couldn't miss in the second half.
John Carroll allowed 53 second-half points in a 91-70 loss to Capital in Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday afternoon.
Katlyn Spahar scored 19 points, but it was not enough to overcome the 62.1 percent clip from the floor for Capital in the second half. Freshman
Bri Pittenger scored 10 points and notched eight rebounds. It was her second consecutive double-digit scoring performance.
Shelby Sigman led Capital with 18 points and five assists. Kristen Thompson added 17 points and seven rebounds.
John Carroll falls to 5-5 overall and 1-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Capital improves to 8-2, and 3-2 in the OAC.
The Blue Streaks and Crusaders combined for 59 fouls in the game. Capital made 25 free throws, the same amount that John Carroll attempted. Five Blue Streaks recorded four or more fouls, with Spahar fouling out late in the fourth quarter.
JCU kept it close through the first two quarters. The Blue and Gold shot just 38.7 percent in the first half, but were able to hold Capital to a five-point lead. Spahar scored 13 in the first half.
Capital led by double-digits for the first time in the third quarter, but John Carroll was able to cut the lead to seven late. A 7-0 Crusaders run over the final 1:45 was a major blow, as Capital led by 14 after three.
John Carroll takes a holiday break before retunring to the hardwood on Dec. 30 against Ferrum College. The teams will tip off at 1:00 p.m. at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
